Famous for founding the Universal Negro Improvement Association in Jamaica in 1914, Marcus Garvey was a visionary for Black nationalism and Pan-Africanism. His mission to honor African history and culture was embodied in the UNIA's initiation of a "back to Africa" movement, and the Black Star Line - a Black-owned passenger line to carry passengers to Africa for an experience of its own. Garvey's commitment to Black economic independence led to the creation of Black-centric restaurants and shopping centers. He was a firm believer in racial separatism as well as nationalism.
